It’s Time to Face Weight Issues

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide obesity has more than doubled since 1980. And in the last year alone, more than 1.9 billion adults (18 years and older) were found overweight! Over 600 million of these were, in fact, obese. These numbers are alarming when you consider that overweight and obesity are major risk factors for a number of diseases such as: diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders (especially osteoarthritis which is considered a highly disabling degenerative disease of the joints), cardiovascular diseases (the leading cause of death in 2012) and even, cancer (endometrial, breast, and colon).

Now, when can we say one is overweight or obese? WHO defines overweight and obesity as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health. Getting a person’s body mass index (BMI) will help us see whether one is overweight or obese. BMI is a person’s weight (in kilograms) divided by the square of his or her height in meters. And so if one has a BMI of 30 and above, one is considered obese while one who has a BMI equal to or more than 25 is considered overweight.
